Lake Elmo Area Information
Lake Elmo, Minnesota is located in Washington County. Much of the city is still farmland, which gives it a rural feel. However, over the next 15 years the city’s population, 6,863 according to the 200 census, is likely to increase due to a new city plan.
Oak-Land Jr. High School, located in Lake Elmo, became one of the first schools to experience Apple’s One to One Laptop Program. Oak-Land is currently in the midst of a two-year study that will gauge the effectiveness of its laptop program. Gil Valdez, Ph.D., is coordinating for Learning Point Associates, and will submit quarterly reports to the U.S. Department of Education on his findings. In his first round or reports, Valdez noted that students “relished and thrived in the atmosphere of change and greater responsibility,” and that “school has become meaningful and exciting, and the students have been empowered as learners and producers of knowledge.”
The major industries that provide employment in Lake Elmo include: manufacturing, health and social services, scientific, management, administrative, waste management, and retail organizations.
Lake Elmo’s tornado activity average is also slightly higher than the rest of Minnesota, however, it is 30% higher than the U.S. average. The last major tornado of record occurred in 1965.
